Information
Autumn
1993
During a visit to Sir Michael Sobell House, Hospice for the Churchill
Hospital, Oxford, Ann Daymond was shown a proposal for the formation
of the Towersey Foundation. The proposal had been prepared by Dr
Colin Lee, full-time Music Therapist at the hospice. The benefits
of Music Therapy to patients in palliative care were immediately
recognised and work began to ensure that such services were made
available in the South West.
March
1995
The decision was made to set up a pilot project at Rowcroft Hospice,
Torquay at the suggestion of the medical director, Dr Richard Scheffer.
January
1996
The Towersey Foundation was formally constituted and registered
as a charity - no. 1052862.
December
1997
Julian O'Kelly was appointed as Music Therapist to work with patients
of Rowcroft (Torquay) and Exeter Hospices. Following a short course
at Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice, Oxford, he began work at the
hospices in January 1998.
August
1998
It was realised that the resourcing and patient mix at Exeter was
not as appropriate as at Torquay and consequently the pilot study
ended at Exeter. Julian began to work full-time with patients from
Rowcroft Hospice and the South Devon Macmillan Team.
March
1999
Towersey's period of commitment to Rowcroft came to an end and Julian
was taken on as a member of the permanent staff at Rowcroft.
July
1999
The Pasque Hospice, Luton requested a Music Therapist for their
two units - an adult hospice servicing Bedfordshire and parts of
Hertfordshire and a children's hospice covering Bedfordshire and
Hertfordshire. Fundraising for this post began.
October
1999
The first Creative Music Therapy Group was established in Bovey
Tracey in conjunction with South Devon Macmillan and Cancope. This
project aimed to take Music Therapy out into the community and reduce
the need for patients to travel to Torquay. Further groups were
anticipated in other towns as soon as funds became available.
February
2000
Following a grant from Marks and Spencer for that purpose, a part-time
administrator for the Towersey Foundation was appointed.
September
2000
A Creative Music Therapy Group was set up in Totnes.
November
2000
Graeme Davis was appointed as full-time Music Therapist for the
Pasque Hospice. The provision of Music Therapy for the children
was the result of a joint project with Jessie's Fund.
January
2001
The Foyle Hospice, Derry, Northern Ireland requested a part-time
Music Therapist to work in the new day care unit being purpose built
to open in January 2002.
May
2001
The Community Fund provided three years' funding for an administrator
and part-time assistant in the office.
September
2001
A Creative Music Therapy group was set up in Newton Abbot.
November
2001
Graeme Davis was made a full-time member of the permanent staff
at the Pasque Hospice.
May
2002
Michelle Wooderson was appointed as part-time Music Therapist at
the Foyle Hospice, Northern Ireland.
June
2002
Thames Valley Hospice, Windsor, requested a part-time Music Therapist.
October
2002
Evelyn Glennie, OBE, agreed to become a Patron of the Towersey Foundation.
'Honeylands'
Children's Centre requested that the Towersey Foundation set up
a Music Therapy appointment for children with severe life-threatening
illnesses. To be in 3 stages: 1) 2 hours for 0 - 2 year olds commencing
January '03; 2) 6 hours during the week for 2 - 12 year olds; and
3) 2 hours on Saturdays for Respite children.
January
2003
Stage 1 at 'Honeylands' was set up with Sue Pratt as the Music Therapist.
May
2003
Michelle Wooderson completed the one-year appointment and was taken
on full-time by the Foyle Hospice, Northern Ireland.
June
2003
The Thames Valley Hospice, Windsor, took on a part-time Music Therapist,
Robin Wiltshire.
September
2003
Henry Dunn was appointed as additional Music Therapist for 'Honeylands',
Exeter.
November
2003
The final stage of the project at 'Honeylands' commenced.
November
2004
The project at 'Honeylands' was completed. 'Honeylands' formed their
own Music Therapy fund.
January
2005
After conducting research, the Foundation discovered that there
was inadequate provision of music therapy for palliative children
at special schools across South Devon. This opened up a new dimension
of work for Towersey. It was decided to set up appointments at schools
where interest had been expressed, these were: Ellen Tinkham School
in Exeter, Bidwell Brook School in Dartington and Mayfield School
in Torquay.
Colin Lee agreed to become Hon. President of the Towersey Foundation.
October
2005
Dove House Hospice, Hull requested a full-time Music Therapist.
November
2005
Jane Gibson was appointed as Music Therapist for Ellen Tinkham Special
School, Exeter.
July
2006
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Foundation was unable to proceed
with the appointment at Bidwell Brook School in Dartington.
January
2007
The Pasque Hospice, Luton, requested a part-time music therapist
for their new 'Music on Wheels' project, designed to provide music
therapy for palliative children in the community.
July
2007
Hospice in the Weald, Pembury, Kent, requested a part-time music
therapist.
Rainbows Children's Hospice, Loughborough, Leicestershire, requested
a part-time music therapist.
February
2008
Kathryn Barker appointed as music therapist for the 'Music on Wheels'
project.
March
2008
David Holmes appointed as music therapist for the Mayfield Special
School project.
October
2008
Fund-raising started for a new project to take music therapy into
three Care Homes in the Newton Abbot area.
The new LYNKS project started. The project is designed to enable
palliative children, who have benefitted from music therapy whilst
at Honeylands Children's Centre, to be able to continue with music
therapy after they have left to go on to Ellen Tinkham School.

2009
Kathryn Barker completed
the one year appointment and was taken on by the Pasque Charity,
Luton.
March
2009
Fleur Chandler appointed as music therapist for Hospice-in-the-Weald,
Pembury.
Due to the success of the Music on Wheels project for children in
association
with Keech Cottage, Luton, the Towersey Foundation is requested
to be
involved in a similar project for adults who are patients of the
Pasque
Hospice, Luton. This service will be accessible to those whom, without
a community based service, would find it difficult to access Music
Therapy at the hospice.
April
2009
Neil Eaves appointed as music therapist for Rainbows Children's
Hospice, Loughborough.
May
2009
Music Therapy at Mayfield is continued by way of a special administrative
arrangement between the Foundation and the School.
September
2009
Briony Ming appointed as music therapist for Dove House Hospice,
Hull.
Care Homes project underway with Claire Phillips as music therapist.
Autumn
2009
Newton Abbot Creative Music Therapy Group started meeting at Coombeswood
House, Newton Abbot.
February
2010
The appointment at Dove House Hospice, Hull, developed so well in
the first six months that the music therapist started working on
a full-time basis.
March
2010
The Foundation completed its commitment to Hospice in the Weald,
Kent.
April
2010
Tony Brooks-Daw becomes Chairman of the Foundation. The Foundation completed its commitment to Dove House Hospice, Hull.
July
2010
The Foundation completed the music therapy appointment at Rainbows
Children’s Hospice, Loughborough. A new building for 16-25's
was completed during the late summer of 2010 including a new music
therapy room.
October
2010
As part of the Care Homes project, music therapy provision is set
up for Forde Park Nursing Home. The Foundation is seeking to extend
music therapy to other Nursing / Care Homes in Torbay over the coming
year subject to funding.
Present
Due to the success of Music on Wheels 1, the hospice has asked The
Towersey Foundation to make provision for Music on Wheels 2 (MOW2),
specifically for adults where a need has been identified. The original
intention was a one day requirement but Keech Hospice Care have
reconsidered and now believe that they need two days to give an
adequate service. The primary aim of MOW2 is to work with adults
in the Milton Keynes area as soon as fundraising is complete.
