ACNE LIGHT THERAPY

Acne vulgaris is one of the wolrd's most common skin conditions, affecting between 85-100% of adolescent by the age of 24. Growing evidence suggests that it now affects up to 50% of adults over 25 years old and that beyond 25 years clinical facial acne occurs more frequently in women than men.

The effective management of acne vulgaris remains a challenge; achieving optimal responses as resistance to antimicrobials increases whilst minimising adverse events has proven difficult to achieve.

How does it work?

The intense pulsed light system release precisely controlled strong pulses of filtered light that targets the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, (P.acnes) that causes the inflammatory response associated with acne vulagris.

P.acnes contains a natural chemical (coproporphyrin III) that reacts with light to produce singlet oxygen, a potent bacteriocidal product. The reaction is contained within the bacteria leaving the surrounding tissue and sebaceous gland intact and fully functional. Light absorption by target cells also stimulates a cascade of cellular pathways that leads to changes in intra and extracellular pH, inhibiting the proliferation of P.acnes.

How is the treatment performed?

The skin is thoroughly cleansed and toned and then a mild exfoliating peel is used. The peel removes the top layers of dead skin, leaving the skin feeling smother and refreshed.

A layer of gel is then applied to the face to guide the light into the skin. The applicator is placed onto the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is then moved around the area until it has been completed covered. The gel is removed and a prescriptive treatment masque will then be applied. You will have the chance to relax while the masque does it work. It will then be removed, followed by toning and moisturising.

How does the treatment feel?

The treatment is comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable.

Am I suitable?

Following a thorough consultation you will be advised of your suitability. Please note that these treatments are not performed during pregnancy or over a suntan.

What are the after effects?

The skin may be slightly red for a few hours. However, most patients experience no after effects. Very rarely darkening or lightening of the skin may occur, but this is only temporary.

What happens after the treatment?

You may feel a warm, glowing sensation. Within a few days an improvement in the complexion usually follows.

How many treatments are required?

Treatments are carried out every 2-3 weeks and 6 treatments are usually recommended initially. Thereafter, top up sessions may be performed as necessary.

How long does the treatment take?

Usually 30-45 minutes.
